The Cross Still Calls Us Home

When I look at this image—the cross standing against the light, the crown of thorns, the nails, and the blood-stained cloth—I am reminded that our salvation came at an immeasurable cost.

Jesus did not go to the cross because He was powerless to stop it. He went willingly. He knew the suffering that awaited Him, yet His love for us was greater than the agony He would endure.

The crown of thorns reminds us of His humiliation. The nails remind us of His suffering. The blood reminds us that a price was paid for our sin. And the cross reminds us just how far the love of God was willing to go to rescue sinners like you and me.

Jesus said:

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” — John 15:13 (NKJV)

But there is something else in this picture that speaks deeply to my heart: the light behind the cross.

Calvary was not the end.

Jesus died, He was buried, and on the third day He rose again! The grave could not hold Him. Death could not defeat Him. Because Christ lives, there is forgiveness for the guilty, hope for the hopeless, restoration for the broken, and eternal life for everyone who truly places their faith in Him.

Perhaps you are reading this while carrying sin, regret, fear, or a burden that nobody else knows about. Maybe you have wandered far from God and wonder whether He would still receive you.

Look again at the cross.

That cross declares that God has not stopped calling sinners to Himself. Jesus still saves. His grace is still sufficient. His mercy is still available. But we must respond to Him—not merely with the word “Amen,” but with our hearts and our lives.

Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” — Matthew 16:24 (NKJV)

My prayer today is that we would never become so familiar with the cross that we lose our wonder at what happened there. May we remember the price Jesus paid, repent of our sins, place our faith in Him, and follow Him faithfully.

The greatest response to the cross is not simply saying, “Amen.” It is surrendering our lives to the One who gave His life for us.

Dear Abba Father, thank You for loving us so deeply that You sent Your Son to save us. Forgive us of our sins and cleanse our hearts. Help us never to take the cross for granted. Draw those who are lost to Christ Jesus, strengthen those who are struggling, and help each of us to live every day with less of ourselves and more of Jesus. May our lives point others to the cross and to the risen Savior.

In the precious name of Christ Jesus, Amen.
