Causing Another to Sin: There Are Consequences

Causing Another to Sin: There Are Consequences

Written by Joseph T Lee

There are very serious consequences in causing another person to fall away from the Lord Jesus as well as causing them to sin. Matthew details this in Chapter 18, verses 1 to 6.

“At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them 3 and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, 6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.”

In this section of Scripture, the Disciples were concerned about who was the greatest among them. They were so concerned about who among themselves will be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus asked for a little child to be brought into his presence and he began to use the child as an analogy. He said that men and women should turn from their wickedness and have faith like a child so that they can enter into the kingdom of heaven. Then He went on to say that those that humble themselves like a child is the greatest in heaven. Whoever receives a Follower of Christ in Jesus name actually receives the Lord.

There was one more very serious point that He wanted to drive home and it was this. Whoever has come to believe in Jesus, and you cause that Follower of Jesus to sin and fall away from the faith, “it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” This was the strongest language Jesus used to indicate that there are grave consequences to causing Followers of Christ to sin, to fall away from the faith, to practice immoral practices.

We live in a society that is godless and unholy. There are so many abominations going on in the United States alone, I am surprised that our Heavenly Father does not punish our nation severely! I know that God is slow to anger, but there is so much immoral behavior, our nation no longer looks like a Christian nation, but looks more like Genesis 19.

The United States has made pornography legal among other abominations. “Every year, the pornographic industry in the United States produces $97 Billion Dollars of filth. Every second, $3,075.64 is being spent on pornography. (The Porn Pandemic written by Lyndon Azcuna) Pornographers and the actors who willfully act in these films and print are causing others to sin.

Satan loves to focus on the sexual immoral. He delights in causing the Children of Christ to fall away from the faith and causing them to sin against God.

Then there are people who do not know Christ but may tempt a weak Christian into sin. Although the baby Christian may have been following Jesus for years, they are not strong in the faith because they have not sought to move closer to Christ Jesus and are still on the milk as opposed to the meat of the Gospel. So a non-Christian comes along who has no morals, and they tempt the young believer in Christ with sex or an affair. They in fact have caused a “little one” in the faith to sin and fall away from the faith to participate in an abomination of God. Woe to the person who does this. They will be severely dealt with by God.

There is a passage in God’s Word that says that we should not be unequally yoked. Look at 2 Corinthians 6:14, “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?” Entering into a relationship with an unbeliever can be detrimental to one’s faith.

If you have believed and received Christ Jesus as your Savior, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit as a Child of God. Then you enter into a relationship with an unbeliever, you most likely are entertaining the presence of demonic activity since the unbeliever is not a Child of God, and is still living in darkness and sin. There is no holy fellowship with light and darkness. Why would someone who has experienced the Light of Christ Jesus get involved with a person who is of the Darkness?

Having a relationship with those who do not love God with all their hearts, soul, and mind, means that you have willfully entered into a relationship with someone of darkness. This is willful disobedience to Christ Jesus and this itself can come with serious ramifications.

As true Christians, we are not to willfully participate in sin or allow others to influence us to sin. But if one who is not a Follower of Christ, but is in darkness causes a Follower of Christ to sin against the Father, then on the Day of Judgement, that person will be held accountable for every horrible deed they did while on earth.

For sexually immoral people to attempt to groom other people into their world of darkness and sin, and cause others to sin with them, there will be consequences that can be eternal. For the sexual immoral people, Satan is in control of their lives. Satan is the prince of this world but there will be consequences even for Satan at the end of this age.

Friends, if you know of someone who has been led astray, pray for them. There is power in the Name of Jesus. We are not fighting flesh and blood but we are in a spiritual warfare with darkness, with evil demonic spirits, with rulers of the air and principalities. These evil demonic spirits can be overcome through serious prayer and fasting. Before you go into this spiritual battle, put on the Full Armor of God as described in Ephesians 6. Then leave it up to the Holy Spirit to do His work.
