Come to Me, All Who Are Heavy Laden

One of my favorite comfort passages is found in Matthew 11:25–30. Of these verses, verses 28–30 have given me the most comfort:

“Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.”

What does it mean to be heavy laden? “Heavy laden” means heavily burdened, weighed down, or carrying a load that has become difficult to bear. In this passage, being heavy laden can picture a person carrying burdens that have become exhausting—sin, guilt, sorrow, fear, worry, spiritual struggles, or the pressures of life. I have experienced all of these burdens, and I bet you have as well.

Placing all of these burdens at the feet of Jesus will help you get through each problem in life. Having faith in Christ Jesus is not a fairy tale, but a real spiritual experience in which His Holy Spirit ministers to you if you are a true Christian. Release those burdens and worries to Jesus. He will take them off your plate, and you can find rest in Him.

Jesus is essentially saying, “You do not have to carry these burdens alone. Come to Me.” The beautiful part of the verse is not merely that Jesus recognizes the burden; He offers rest to the burdened person.

And notice Jesus’ first words: “Come to Me.” Our greatest rest is not ultimately found in escaping every difficulty—it is found in coming to Christ and trusting Him in the midst of it.

What does “gentle and lowly in heart” mean?

Lowly here means humble. Jesus is describing His own heart toward those who come to Him. He is not harsh, arrogant, or unwilling to receive the weary. He is gentle, humble, compassionate, and approachable.

When Jesus says, “Take My yoke upon you,” He is calling us to submit ourselves to Him and become His disciples. A yoke was placed upon animals so they could work under the direction of their master. Jesus uses that familiar picture spiritually: Come under My leadership. Walk with Me. Learn from Me.

Following Jesus does not mean living without responsibility or obedience. Rather, we exchange the crushing burden of trying to live apart from Christ for a life lived under His loving Lordship.

And what are we to learn from Him? Among many things, His gentleness and humility.

That makes this passage deeply comforting: the One asking us to surrender ourselves to Him is gentle and lowly in heart.

When Jesus says, “My yoke is easy,” He does not mean that following Him will always be easy or free from suffering. Jesus taught that His disciples would face trials and would need to deny themselves and follow Him.

Rather, His yoke represents living under His authority, teaching, and guidance. Unlike the crushing burdens of sin and trying to carry life entirely in our own strength, Christ invites us to walk with Him.

His “burden is light” because He is with us in carrying it. We are not left alone to somehow make ourselves righteous or strong enough.

There is a beautiful flow through the whole passage:

Come to Me — bring your weariness to Jesus.

Take My yoke — surrender to His Lordship.

Learn from Me — become His disciple.

I am gentle and lowly in heart — discover the character of the One you are following.

You will find rest for your souls — experience the spiritual rest found in Christ.

My yoke is easy and My burden is light — walk in obedience with Christ rather than carrying life apart from Him.

Jesus isn’t simply saying, “Put down your burden.” He is inviting us to exchange it for His yoke—to belong to Him, learn from Him, obey Him, and walk beside Him.

So today, why not trade your burdens for the yoke of Christ Jesus? He loves you so much. Surrender to Him today, take His yoke upon you, learn from Him, and follow Him.
